How to use more than one Serum in your Skin Care Routine?

Como usar mais do que um Sérum na sua Rotina de Cuidados de Pele?

The choice of Serum (or serums) to use may be the one that will most affect the results of your skin care routine. These products are precisely designed to be easily absorbed, concentrated in active ingredients, and have the ability to penetrate the skin to reach the layers where these ingredients can effectively make a difference. So, whatever your skin needs, or needs, your serums are what will help you achieve your goals and see more results.

How to choose the ideal Serum

Choosing a Serum is actually quite simple: first you need to identify exactly what you want to improve on your skin. Is the skin tired and lifeless? Got little pimples? Do you have texture? Do you have chronically dehydrated skin? Lack of firmness or wrinkles that start to settle? From there you will determine which Serum or serums are ideal for your skin.

Using more than one Serum is possible?

It is possible that your skin has more than one need, and in this case you can choose to have more than one Serum and alternate the different options.

Or, depending on the active ingredients, you can even apply more than one Serum, in layers. For example, Hyaluronic acid serums - great for fighting dehydration - can be easily combined with Vitamin C - essential for brightening the skin and fighting skin blemishes - or with retinoid serums - a must for anti-aging. Vitamin C and Retinol should be applied spaced apart. For example, Vitamin C in the morning and Retinoids in the evening.

How many serums can you use?

While there is no limit to how many serums you can add to your beauty and wellness ritual, we suggest that you do not use more than two serums in one routine. Stacking more than two serums is not only time consuming, it also reduces the chances of each ingredient being properly absorbed by your skin.

If you are trying to address multiple concerns, opt for an all-in-one serum to address general issues (like dryness or oiliness) and add a serum that targets more pressing concerns like fine lines and wrinkles.

How do you apply several Serums in a single routine?

As with all skin care products, the use of several serums in a single routine is based on the texture of the serum: from the lightest to the heaviest. This process is called "layering" and generally simply means that you apply the product with the most watery texture first, ending with the product with the creamiest or oily texture.

Exceptions are serums with active ingredients that need to be as close to the skin as possible, such as retinol, vitamin C, salicylic acid or pimple treatments. In this case, we suggest you do a serum rotation. That is, instead of using them in a single routine, applying them in layers, make a rotation in which you apply one in the morning and another at night, or even alternate different serums, day in and day out.

What should not be mixed?

As a rule, you should not mix retinol with other exfoliating ingredients such as AHA or BHA acids or salicylic acid, or with vitamin C.

If you want to use retinol with these ingredients, choose to rotate. You can, for example, apply Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. Or one night use your exfoliating acids and another night apply your retinol serum, but without using them on the same day.

Otherwise, you can use retinol with ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid (to help hydrate the skin and fight dryness caused by retinol) or Niacinamide (for greater cell renewal and younger-looking skin).

You should always wear sunscreen every day, but if you use exfoliating acids (AHA or BHA) or retinol, it's especially important that you don't forget to apply your sunscreen the next morning!

What are the best combinations of serums and active skin care ingredients?

It is possible to write an entire article just on this subject ☺️ But as a rule, you can start with one of these combinations:

Retinol and Niacinamide: cell renewal and younger skin

Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid: younger and plumper skin

Salicylic Acid and Niacinamide: fights acne and pimples

Vitamin C and Vitamin E: increased collagen production
